Who Could Ever Love a Monster?

Written by Deanna Nguyen

Your name takes shape in wary whispers

Never spoken aloud

For fear that you would devour their voices

And bite the screams from their throats

While you watch them in between

The jaws of death

Your story echoes in the dread of night

Used as an example

To those who care not to listen

And would rather cause an uproar

While you wait in

The silence of darkness

Your image draws up recurring nightmares

A swindler of peace

Blinding the ones who dare to dream

In your disguised wake

While you greet

The reflection of envy

Your existence is steeped in despair

Unworthy of affection

Kept in a lightless and cold place

Unreachable and distant

While you waste away in

The presence of loneliness

Because who could ever love a monster?
